How to Watch World Cup 2026 TV & Streaming Guide (UK)

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the biggest sporting television event in a generation, 104 matches, 39 days, and the best news possible for UK viewers: every single fixture is free to watch. BBC Sport and ITV jointly hold the UK broadcast rights for the entire tournament, meaning all 104 matches from 11 June to 19 July 2026 will be shown free-to-air with no subscription, no paywall and no requirement beyond a valid TV licence. England’s three group-stage fixtures all fall in the evening BST, 9pm, 9pm and 10pm, making them the most UK-friendly group matches the Three Lions have been given at a tournament hosted outside Europe. Scotland fans face more unsociable hours, with their opener against Haiti kicking off at 2am BST, though the Morocco and Brazil fixtures are at 11pm BST. This guide tells you exactly which channel shows every England and Scotland fixture, how to stream on BBC iPlayer and ITVX, and what the confirmed match split looks like across both broadcasters. For the complete UK kick-off time breakdown, see our World Cup 2026 schedule, and visit our World Cup 2026 hub for all tournament coverage.

BBC and ITV: Every Match Free, Every Fixture Covered

The BBC and ITV rights deal for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups was confirmed by FIFA in December 2024 and the full match split between the two broadcasters was announced on 10 December 2025. The 104 matches are divided evenly: each broadcaster airs 52 fixtures. ITV kicks off the tournament, the opening match, Mexico vs South Africa on 11 June at 8pm BST, goes out on ITV1, ITV4, ITVX, STV and STV Player. BBC joins the coverage the following day, 12 June, with Canada’s opening match.

ITV airs 29 of the 72 group-stage matches and holds three of the top four quarter-final picks, plus five of the top nine Round of 32 selections. BBC takes three of the top four Round of 16 picks and three of the top five Round of 32 choices. In practice, this means the BBC is the home for the deeper knockout rounds if England progress, the Round of 32, Round of 16 and semi-final are all confirmed as BBC broadcasts for England, while the quarter-final falls to ITV. ITV produces its World Cup coverage live from a studio in New York City for the duration of the tournament. BBC coverage is produced across multiple US locations.

The key principle to understand is this: ITV has the earlier, flashier group-stage allocation including opening matches for several big nations, the first fixtures for defending champions Argentina, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain all go out on ITV. BBC takes the longer-term premium slots, including England’s deepest knockout potential and the pick of the Round of 16. Both broadcasters show the final simultaneously. The result is that no matter which channel you watch, you will not miss a match, but knowing which broadcaster carries which fixture matters enormously for planning.

Key match split at a glance

Stage ITV allocation BBC allocation
Group stage 29 matches (incl. England vs Croatia, England vs Panama, Scotland vs Morocco) 43 matches (incl. England vs Ghana, Scotland vs Haiti, Scotland vs Brazil)
Round of 32 5 of top 9 picks (incl. England QF path) 3 of top 5 picks (incl. England R32 and R16)
Round of 16 Remaining picks 3 of top 4 picks
Quarter-finals 3 of 4 (top two picks) Remaining QF
Semi-finals One semi-final One semi-final (England’s if they qualify)
Final (19 Jul) Simultaneous broadcast Simultaneous broadcast

ITV matches air across ITV1 and ITV4. BBC matches air across BBC One and BBC Two. Scottish viewers also have access to STV and STV Player for selected fixtures. BBC Radio 5 Live and 5 Sports Extra provide full audio commentary across the tournament. All kick-off times in this guide are in British Summer Time (BST).

Streaming on BBC iPlayer and ITVX: Everything You Need to Know

Every match available on BBC television is simultaneously streamed live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app. Every ITV match is simultaneously streamed on ITVX, available via the ITVX app, ITV’s website and the ITV Sport app. Both platforms are free to access, but there are important distinctions that supporters should understand before the tournament begins.

BBC iPlayer requires a valid UK TV licence to watch any live or on-demand content, this applies whether you are streaming on a phone, laptop, smart TV or tablet. Watching England vs Ghana on BBC iPlayer without a valid TV licence is unlawful in the same way as watching on a television set. The same rule applies to any live content broadcast on BBC channels. ITVX is slightly different: you can create a free ITVX account and watch ITV’s on-demand replays of matches without a TV licence once the live broadcast has ended. However, streaming the match live on ITVX as it is being broadcast does require a TV licence. The practical advice is to create your free ITVX account before the tournament starts, registration takes minutes and ensures you are not scrambling to set it up at 8:45pm on 17 June when England vs Croatia kicks off.

Both iPlayer and ITVX are available on smart TVs, Fire TV Sticks, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, PS4/PS5, Xbox, iOS and Android devices. BBC iPlayer supports up to 1080p HD streaming; ITVX offers HD and selected 4K content. Both platforms allow you to watch on the move via mobile data, though wi-fi is strongly recommended for match-length streaming to avoid buffering on poorer signals. Highlights of every match are available via ITV Sport YouTube and on both broadcaster apps after each fixture.

One additional option: BBC iPlayer and ITVX YouTube channels are permitted to stream the first ten minutes of all 104 matches live on their respective YouTube accounts, with a small number of full-match streams also available. This does not require a TV licence but availability is limited. For the best reliability and picture quality, the official apps remain the recommended route.

England Fixtures: Which Channel for Each Match

All three of England’s group-stage fixtures are confirmed to UK broadcast channels. Two go out on ITV, one on BBC, and crucially, all three kick off in the evening BST, giving the Three Lions the most viewer-friendly group-stage allocation England have received at a tournament hosted outside Europe.

Date Match Venue BST K/O Channel Stream
Wed 17 Jun England vs Croatia AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas 9:00pm ITV1 / ITV4 ITVX
Tue 23 Jun England vs Ghana Gillette Stadium, Boston 9:00pm BBC One BBC iPlayer
Sat 27 Jun Panama vs England MetLife Stadium, New Jersey 10:00pm ITV1 / ITV4 ITVX

England’s knockout path, should Tuchel’s side progress, is predominantly on the BBC. The Round of 32 fixture (provisionally around 1–3 July), the Round of 16 tie (4–7 July) and a potential semi-final (14 or 15 July) are all on BBC One, with streaming via iPlayer. Should England reach the quarter-finals, that fixture is on ITV. The final, potentially with England in it, is broadcast simultaneously on BBC One and ITV1 at 8pm BST on 19 July. Both broadcasters carry all England fixtures, meaning you can choose your preferred commentary team for each match.

At the 2022 World Cup, England’s quarter-final defeat to France drew more than 19 million viewers in the UK, a figure that would almost certainly be exceeded if the Three Lions reach the same stage in North America. The combination of evening kick-offs and free-to-air coverage makes 2026 one of the most accessible England tournaments in decades from a UK viewing perspective. For Thomas Tuchel’s full squad analysis and tournament previews, see our [England World Cup 2026 guide].

Scotland Fixtures: Two Nights on the BBC, One on ITV

Scotland’s group-stage matches are split across both broadcasters, with BBC holding the more significant fixtures, including the headline match against Brazil in Miami, which the BBC director of sport specifically cited in the rights announcement as a fixture of national importance for Scottish viewers.

Date (BST) Match Venue BST K/O Channel Stream
Sun 14 Jun (2am) Haiti vs Scotland Gillette Stadium, Boston 2:00am BBC One BBC iPlayer
Fri 19 Jun Scotland vs Morocco Gillette Stadium, Boston 11:00pm ITV1 / ITV4 ITVX
Wed 24 Jun Scotland vs Brazil Hard Rock Stadium, Miami 11:00pm BBC One BBC iPlayer

The 2am BST kick-off for Scotland’s opening match against Haiti on 14 June is the fixture that will test the dedication of the Tartan Army. Haiti are the most beatable opponent in Group C and Scotland must win, but doing so at 2am GMT+1 while the whole nation sleeps creates an unusual pressure on live viewing figures. The BBC will broadcast the match on BBC One with full studio coverage; those opting to sleep and watch on-demand can replay via BBC iPlayer, though a TV licence remains required. Scotland’s knockout path, if achieved, would also follow the BBC for Round of 32, Round of 16 and semi-final stages, with any quarter-final on ITV.

Scottish viewers additionally have access to STV (STV1) and STV Player, which simulcast selected ITV programming including Scotland fixtures aired on ITV. STV will carry Scotland vs Morocco (19 June, ITV allocation) and any ITV-broadcast Scotland knockout fixtures.
