Ruben Amorim hits back at Wayne Rooney: ‘I understand that everyone knows better, but…’

Ruben Amorim bites back after club legend Wayne Rooney commented that he was being naive. The Portuguese coach of Manchester United stated after Sunday’s FA Cup elimination that the club’s goal is to win the Premier League, which surprised Rooney.

Rooney, as an analyst in the BBC’s studio, stated that it is “a little naive” to talk about a Premier League title, given the position Manchester United finds itself in. The club is fourteenth in the league and was eliminated by Fulham in the FA Cup’s round of sixteen.

Amorim responds to Rooney’s comments in front of the BBC’s cameras and stands by his point: ‘That is the goal. It would be naive to think we could achieve that this season. Or that we would be the favourites for next season.’

The Portuguese man takes a dig at Rooney: ‘I understand that everyone knows better. It’s very easy. I was an analyst when I ended my career (as a footballer, ed.). I know it’s very easy.’

Remarkably enough, the successor to Erik ten Hag minimises his own role when it comes to the club’s ambitions: ’Our goal is to win the Premier League. Maybe it won’t be under my leadership, but our goal as a club, with the club management, is to win the Premier League. As we did in the past with all the legends of this club.’

‘We want to do better and I know we’re struggling at the moment,’ the coach continues. ’I’m not naive, that’s why I’m the coach of Manchester United at the age of forty.’
