Premier League: Three Outsiders Worth Backing (Each-Way) to be Top Goalscorer

With less than a month to go until the 2017/18 Premier League season kicks off, many punters will be risking their hard-earned cash on the prospect of a win-fall come next May.

One market popular with long-term punters is for top goalscorer, or the race for the golden boot.

Whilst many will back one of the favourites, such as Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero, or Romelu Lukaku, there are some who look for a great value each-way bet.

Ladbrokes pay 1/4 the odds in the each-way market for the first four. Last season, fourth place was tied between Aguero and Diego Costa with twenty goals each.

Whilst it may seem out of reach for some, there are a few strikers who will be looking to reach that twenty-goal target. Therefore, there are some extremely tempting prices on offer for potential each-way backers.

Here are three players we feel have a great chance of being at least in the top four on the list of top goalscorers at the end of the upcoming season.

Christian Benteke (50/1)

Belgian international Benteke scored fifteen league goals in his first season at Crystal Palace, and will be looking for more in this campaign.

Palace fought a long relegation battle last term and new manager Frank de Boer will have his eye on a much better season in 2017/18. Benteke will be key to those plans.

He is yet to net twenty league goals in a season since arriving in England in 2012, but he did finish fourth on the list in 2012/13 and has been in the top ten twice more.

If players like Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend can provide the ammunition, Benteke may well score the goals to lift Palace into the top-half and himself into the running for the golden boot.

Charlie Austin (50/1)

Austin scored eighteen goals to finish fourth in the race for the golden boot in his very first Premier League season, playing for relegated Queens Park Rangers in 2014/15.

He then dropped to the Championship with QPR before moving to Southampton in January 2016. Just one goal came from his seven league appearances for his new club in the second half of the 2015/16 season, but great things were still expected of him.

Those great things looked like they were coming last season but a severe injury forced him to miss most of the season. He still managed to net six goals in fifteen appearances, of which he only played the full ninety minutes twice.

Austin is a natural goal scorer and with more game time, and if he can stay fully fit, he will find the net with regularity.

Jermain Defoe (66/1)

It’s almost unbelievable that a player who has scored thirty Premier League goals in the past two seasons is priced at 66/1 for the golden boot. If you consider that his team, Sunderland, only scored a total of seventy-seven in that time, it makes it even more unbelievable.

Last term, Defoe scored more than half of Sunderland’s goals and has moved to a much better Bournemouth team in time for the 2017/18 campaign.

His new side scored almost double the amount his old team did last season, which should mean the England striker has more opportunity to get his name on the scoresheet.

If he can settle in to life at Bournemouth and remain as prolific in front of goal as he has been, Defoe looks a fantastic each-way bet in the top goalscorer market.

Top E/W Betting Tip

Our top tip from the three above is Christian Benteke. Palace are a club with the potential to move up to the next level, and Benteke will be a massive part of that. 50/1 at Ladbrokes looks like too tempting a price to turn down.
