Morocco vs Ivory Coast Game Preview

Both Morocco and Ivory Coast secured a narrow 1-0 wins in their first match of the Africa Cup of Nations, and this encounter will likely decide the winner of Group D. Ivory Coast are slight favourites because of Morocco’s inconsistency of late but doesn’t mean anything in the games such as this and everything is wide open.

Morocco Team News and Latest Form

In a crunch tie for top-spot of Group D, one-time winners Morocco (FIFA rank: #47) take on two-time winners Ivory Coast (#62) in a tighter-than-tight matchup. As well as both teams holding an identical record in the qualifiers (W3, D2, L1), both won their Africa Cup of Nations openers 1-0.

After snapping a nine-game H2H winless run in all competitions with two consecutive wins to-nil (including friendlies), Morocco are now looking to go seven games unbeaten in the AFCON (including qualifiers). An 89th-minute own goal gave the Atlas Lions victory in their opening game and added to an impressive record of 53.85% clean sheets in 26 previous competitive matches (W14, D7, L5).

Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech had a blinding 2018/19 domestic run (21 goals in all competitions) and scored a brace in a recent international friendly.

Ivory Coast Team News and Latest Form

Also hoping to go seven games unbeaten (including qualifiers), Ivory Coast left it to the second half to beat South Africa in equally uninspiring fashion. It is worth noting that the Elephants have drawn eight competitive games 0-0 since September 2016 (W7, D12, L8) and have seen 65.38% of such games produce under 2.5 goals (total).

Scoring two or more goals in 35.56% of 45 previous games since 2016, Ivory Coast meet a Morocco team who’ve netted twice or more in 51.11% of 45 last games (including friendlies). Small margins perhaps, but with three H2H competitive victories each – five of which ended 1-0 – could we see another AFCON low-impact affair here?

Aston Villa’s Jonathan Kodjia has ten international goals from 20 call-ups and has scored in his last two outings.

Morocco vs Ivory Coast Head to Head

These rivals have met on 13 occasions, and the current H2H record is five victories for Ivory Coast and three for Morocco with five draws. Atlas Lions were better in the previous two encounters and didn’t allow a single goal in the process. These teams’ tournament openers, as well as their last two H2H meetings, saw under nine corners (total). Both sides have scored in 26.92% and 30.77% of Morocco and Ivory Coast’s last 26 competitive matches, respectively. In 24 combined competitive games since their previous meeting, 41.67% of those games saw goals in both halves.

Morocco vs Ivory Coast Betting Tip

Although none of the last five H2H duels produced goals on both sides and both teams failed to score in their respective AFCON openers, I am going with BTTS here at high 5/4 odds with William Hill. Ziyech, Boussoufa, and Amrabat can create something out of nothing, and each of them has the ability to score it from long range while Ivory Coast have such players as Kodjia, Pepe, Doumbia, and Zaha, all of which are excellent goal-scorers.
