Denmark Euro 2020: Team News, Odds & Predictions

Denmark1992 European champions Denmark have been drawn in Group B at Euro 2020, with the Danes looking to make up for missing out on the tournament in France last time around. The Red and Whites qualified for the finals without losing a match, giving them confidence ahead of clashes against Belgium, Russia and Finland. So, just how far can Denmark go this summer? On this page, we take a closer look at the Danish team. This includes key players, fixtures and betting odds.

Denmark History

Denmark have not had much success to write home about over recent years, having failed to qualify for Euro 2016, while being knocked out of the 2018 World Cup at the Round of 16 stage by Croatia. However, as we have already mentioned, Denmark did win Euro 92. Denmark beat Germany 2-0 in the final that year, which is their only major tournament title. Since then, there best showing in the European Championships was a quarter final spot in 2004.

How Denmark Qualified for Euro 2020

Having been drawn in Group D alongside Switzerland, Republic of Ireland, Georgia and Gibraltar, Denmark won four and drew four of their 8 qualifying matches. Scoring 23 goals and conceding just 6 along the way, the Danes finished as runners up, just a single point behind the Swiss. Denmark’s qualifying campaign included 6-0 wins home and away against Gibraltar, as well as an entertaining 3-3 draw in Switzerland. Midfielder Christian Eriksen was the top scorer in the entire group, having found the back of the net five times. Christian Gytkjær scored four, while Martin Braithwaite ajd Robert Skov finished with three apiece.

Denmark in Group B

Despite having been drawn alongside Belgium, who are among the favourites to win Euro 2020, Denmark will fancy their chances of making it out of Group B. A win against debutants Finland in their opening fixture would set them on their way, however it is likely that they will need something against Russia on June 21 if they are to finish in one of the top two positions. Below is how Denmark’s Group B fixures look:

Denmark Euro 2020: Odds & Predictions

Despite having won the tournament before, Denmark remain rank outsiders to repeat the trick this summer. However, reaching the knockout phase is the minimum expectation for the team, a market which is available at odds of 2/9 with SportNation. Meanwhile, the following are the outright odds from leading bookmakers on Denmark winning Euro 2020:

Bet365 28/1
Tonybet 66/1
888Sport 53/1
SportNation 30/1
Betfair 25/1
NetBet 30/1
William Hill 28/1
Ladbrokes 25/1

Other available outright markets surrounding Denmark include odds of 5/1 on Kasper Schmeichell saving a penalty during the tournament, outside of a penalty shootout. Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen is 80/1 with Bet365 and Betfair to win the player of the tournament award. Denmark are the firm favourites to beat Finland in their opening game, with best odds of 1/2 being available at William Hill.

The Manager

Kasper Hjulmand has not been in charge of Denmark long, with the 49-year-old having taken over from Åge Hareide just last year. Hjulmand has big shoes to fill, with Denmark having gone 34 matches unbeaten under Hareide. Hjulmand has coached Nordsjælland and Mainz 05 in the past, to varying levels of success. So far with Denmark, he has a 72% winning record, having lost just 2 in 11. He won the Danish Superliga: 2011–12 during his first spell in charge of Nordsjælland.

Standout Players

Having recently won the Serie A title with Inter Milan, it is difficult to look past Christian Eriksen. The midfielder is the main creative spark for Denmark, with the likes of Yussuf Poulsen and Martin Braithwaite likely to benefit. There is plenty of Premier League talent on display for Denmark too, including goalkeeper and Captain Kasper Schmeichel. The Leicester City man will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of his father, who won the title back in 1992. Elsewhere, Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen could well partner Simon Kjær in central defence for Denmark. Denmark’s squad is a hugely experienced one, with only three players being aged 22 and under.

Denmark’s Strengths & Weaknesses

Denmark have kept a clean sheet in six of their last eight matches in all competitions. This provides a clear indication of just where their strengths lie. The likes of Christensen and Kjær are backed up well by Schmeichel in between the sticks. Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Delaney and Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg also work hard to support those behind them.

Denmark are perhaps lacking a top striker. Both Poulsen and Braithwaite are capable of scoring, however netiher are prolific. With Eriksen being one of the most creative players in the tournament, the former Spurs man would undoubtedly benefit from a top marksmen. Kasper Dolberg was once thought to be the next big thing in Danish football, however the youngster has yet to kick on from his early promise.

Our Prediction for Denmark at Euro 2020

Denmark have good quality across the pitch, which is why we are backing them to reach the Round of 16 at Euro 2020. Denmark are 2/9 with SportNation to qualify from Group B, with the Round of 16 being the first knockout stage of the tournament. Much depends on their opening match against Finland, however they should have the quality to give both Belgium and Russia tough tests too.
