Sterling & Van Dijk Lead the Way in Player of the Year Odds

With the shortlist for the much-coveted Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year Award having been announced last week, the winner is almost certain to come from either Manchester City or Liverpool. Having scored an impressive 17 goals in the Premier League so far this season, Raheem Sterling is perhaps unsurprisingly the favourite for the award, while inspirational Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is also firmly in the running.

In fact, there are three Manchester City players on the six-man shortlist, including midfielder Bernardo Silva and talisman Sergio Aguero. Meanwhile, Sadio Mane joins teammate van Dijk for title-chasing rivals Liverpool, with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard completing the list. With last season’s winner Mohamed Salah having failed to reach the same heights as he did last year, it now appears that 2018 PFA Young Player of the Year winner Sterling will go one better this time around. The England international is offered odds of 5/2 with bookmaker Betfair, while van Dijk is priced at just 1/4 with Paddy Power.

The impact in which both players have had on their team’s success this season cannot be underestimated, with Sterling having scored 23 goals in all competitions, while van Dijk has been part of a Liverpool side that has conceded just 20 goals all season. With both City and Liverpool still battling it out for the Premier League title over the coming weeks, whichever team comes out on top could well have an impact upon who eventually collects the individual award.

Players’ Player of the Year 2019: Sterling Vs. Van Dijk

Meanwhile, Sterling is also up for the Young Player of the Year Award once more, along with England teammates Marcus Rashford, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice. Bournemouth’s David Brooks makes up the shortlist, however it is Sterling who could well claim a double success when the winners are announced at London’s Grosvenor House on Sunday 28th April. Should the former QPR youngster do so, it would top off an incredible season for the winger, who is aiming to lead City to a domestic treble, which would include back-to-back titles for the first time in Manchester City’s history.

The race between City and Liverpool for the Premier League title could well go to the wire, with Pep Guardiola’s side potentially moving back to the top of the standings with a win against rivals Manchester United on Wednesday evening at Old Trafford. City remain the 4/7 favourites with Ladbrokes to pip Liverpool to the title come the end of the campaign.
