Spurs also choke: Newcastle enter top Premier League

shutterstock 638739301Newcastle United is the surprising number four of the Premier League after 12 games. The team performed excellently anyway, but also managed to beat a top club for the first time this season on Sunday night. Tottenham Hotspur went down 1-2 at home.

The season start of both Tottenham and Newcastle went very well. Spurs lost only to Arsenal (3-1) and Manchester United (2-0), and The Magpies too have already recorded many good results. The only thing missing – as in the case of Tottenham – was a win over a top club. Earlier, Newcastle lost 2-1 to Liverpool (the only league defeat so far) and held Manchester City (3-3) and Manchester United (0-0) to a draw.

Against number three Tottenham, however, there appeared to be more in it for Eddie Howe’s team. After half an hour of play, it was Callum Wilson who managed to put the ball perfectly into the goal. This was preceded by a collision with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, but the referee and VAR did not see a foul. Even before half-time, Newcastle’s lead was doubled. Club top scorer Miguel Almiron sprinted past the defence and passed Lloris for a second time. His sixth of the season put his side ahead 0-2.

After half-time, Tottenham did seem to have time to put things in order. In the 54th minute, Harry Kane – who had no easy night opposite Sven Botman – popped up at the far post after a corner to head in the tying goal. However, Spurs would not get further than that. Newcastle remained unbeaten for the seventh game in a row and climb to fourth. It is just two points below Tottenham Hotspur, who remain third after the defeat.
