Problems Mount for Manchester United

It has certainly not been ideal preparation for the new season for Manchester United. After Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were knockout out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage by Sevilla, club Captain Harry Maguire was arrested and charged for a fracas in Mykonos, before midfielder Paul Pogba contracted Coronavirus. After what had been a positive end to their domestic campaign, having secured their place in the Champions League after finishing third in the Premier League standings, fans at Old Trafford are understandably frustrated at what they see as a lack of ambition.

Manchester UnitedUnited’s top four finish had meant that a move for England international Jadon Sancho had looked like something of a formality. However, with Borussia Dortmund understandably being unwilling to let one of their prized assets leave for a bargain price, even in these uncertain times, United face the prospect of starting the season having not spent a penny in the transfer market.

Could Sancho Still Arrive at Old Trafford?

Sancho remains an option for United, with bookmaker BetVictor even pricing him at 4/6 to complete a move to Old Trafford before the transfer window shuts at the beginning of October, however fans are becoming impatient. The likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea have all made moves already, while United are struggling to do business when it comes to both incomings and outgoings.

The likes of Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero and Jesse Lingard are all believed to be on the transfer list, however it is only Alexis Sanchez in which United have been able to get off their books so far this summer, and that was on a free transfer.

Who Else Have United Been Linked With?

As far as arrivals are concerned, David Brooks, Donny van de Beek, Jack Grealish and Benoit Badiashile have been linked with transfers to United, however it is thought that no bids have been placed at this stage. United start their Premier League campaign at home against Old Trafford on September 19, having been given an extra week off following their Europe League involvement.

However, with Pogba potentially missing out due to quarantine rules and Maguire having had to endure a rough time of things in a Greek court, United could certainly do with some good news sooner rather than later. The announcement that goalkeeper Dean Henderson has signed a new long-term deal was certainly welcomed, however it raises questions regarding the future of both Romero and current No.1 David De Gea.
