Robert Lewandowski agrees move and is set to leave Bayern Munich

With the World Cup fast approaching, clubs are attempting to complete as much transfer business as they can ahead of the summer spectacle.  However, one potential transfer which may rumble on throughout the tournament is the destination of Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish striker will be representing his country in Russia this summer but there is a huge question mark over which club he will play for next season.

Bayern Star

Currently starring for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, Lewandowski has enjoyed a hugely successful career at the German club.  The Pole has won the Bundesliga title four times, finished as the Bundesliga top goal scorer twice and won the Bundesliga Player of the Year Award.

Lewandowski also topped the goal scoring charts in the UEFA section of World Cup qualifying, netting 16 goals for his country as he led Poland to the 2018 World Cup finals.

However, there is one trophy which is yet to be won by Lewandowski and that’s the Champions League.  Despite being one of the favourites at the beginning of each season, Bayern Munich have failed to win the tournament during Lewandowski’s spell at the club and that may be the main reason why he could be looking to leave.

Pini Zahavi, Lewandowski’s agent told Sport Bild magazine that the Bundesliga’s top scorer “feels that he needs a change and a new challenge in his career”.  He also added that Lewandowski’s reasons “are not money or a specific club, as nearly all top clubs would like to have the world’s best striker in their ranks”.

At 29 years of age, Lewandowski knows time is running out if he wants to make one more big move in European club football.  He has scored 106 goals in 126 Bundesliga games for the club since switching from Borussia Dortmund in 2014 and is rated as one of the top strikers in the world.

Lewandowski’s contract at Bayern Munich runs until 2021 and Bayern’s chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, recently ruled out a transfer by saying, “We know what we have in Robert Lewandowski. Nobody need worry, he will also play football here in Munich next year.”

Potential Candidates

However, that has not stopped Europe’s top clubs circling for the striker and Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with a move for the former Lech Poznan man.  The fee could be anything up to £100 million but with Romelu Lukaku already at Manchester United, no Champions League football at Chelsea and Real Madrid currently without a manager, will any of these make a move Lewandowski?

With the World Cup starting soon, it appears any potential deal will have to be done when Poland have returned from the competition.  By which time, Real Madrid should be close to naming their new boss and the Champions League winners are sure to be the front-runners when it comes to landing the Polish international.
