The famous Blackpool Winter Gardens in the north west of England will once again play host to the World Matchplay Darts tournament. This great event will step up to the oche for the opening action on July 22nd and the final of the tournament will be played on July 30th. This is one of the highlights on the darts calendar and this is the 24th edition of the tournament which has long been dominated throughout its history by one man.
That man is Phil “The Power” Taylor who has won the tournament a remarkable 15 times from the previous 23 editions. That’s some record and he was in the final last year, but there he slipped to the power that is Michael “Mighty Mike” van Gerwen. The Power has seen his long reign at the top of the game slip away over the last couple of seasons and Van Gerwen has claimed the last two World Matchplay titles. Taylor is a big 25/1 outside shot for the tournament and that is because he is seeded eighth and that would put him in a quarter final showdown against, yes, you guessed it, Van Gerwen.
