Flushing Meadows once again rolls out the last Tennis Grand Slam action of the season. The US Open starts on Monday, August 28th and runs for a couple of weeks and during the build up, most of the attention was on who isn’t attending the draws. In the men’s draw, the notable absentees announced before the start of the tournament were Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and the current US Open title holder Stan Wawrinka. There have been key withdrawals in the women’s draw as well with Victoria Azarenka not wanting to leave her new son, while Serena Williams is pregnant. So they are big factors missing from the draw and because of all the losses of top players, it should make for both the men’s and women’s draws being wide open at the US Open 2017. The women’s draw is just a fantastic looking competition, with genuine contenders running right through the draw from world number one Karolina Pliskova, to great British hope Jo Konta and through to America’s Coco Vandeweghe.
Even though the men’s draw has former US Open Champions Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in their, Federer’s last title at Flushing Meadows was way back in 2008 while Rafael has only lifted the crown once in the last six editions of the tournament. We have seen the likes of Marin Cilic and Stan Wawrinka get their hands on the title recently, with Kei Nishikori getting to the 2014 final as well. So is there a hint of an upset in the men’s draw when a first-time winner such as Grigor Dimitrov, Dominic Thiem or Alexander Zverev comes through?
