Chelsea Set for Record Breaking Transfer Window

Chelsea Set for Record Breaking Transfer Window

While other clubs have been reluctant to spend due to the financial damage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Chelsea are showing no signs of slowing their spending, with Brazilian defender Thiago Silva set to become their fourth signing of the summer. Having already splashed an estimated £120 million in order to bring Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell to Stamford Bridge, Silva will arrive on a free transfer, however a substantial signing on fee and weekly wage will be involved.

After completing their transfer ban and having the money from Eden Hazard’s move to Real Madrid last summer in reserve, it comes as little surprise that Chelsea have been active, with owner Roman Abramovic clearly backing manager Frank Lampard. Many bookies have now also suspended the betting on Kai Havertz moving to West London too, with the German international set to join from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, in a deal that could be worth as much as £90 million.

Could Chelsea Break the Record for Transfer Spending?

ChelseaReal Madrid broke the record for the most amount of money spend in a single transfer window last summer, brining in the likes of Hazard, Luka Jovic and Ferland Mendy, Eder Militao and Rodrygo for around £270 million. While Chelsea are set to be shy of this figure, they could well challenge Manchester City’s spending in 2017, when Pep Guardiola splashed £220 million on Kyle Walker, Ederson, Benjamin Mendy, Danilo and Bernardo Silva.

Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League standings last season, level on points with Manchester United in third. However, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side having yet to add to his playing squad so far this summer, it is the Blues who are expected to finish ahead of them this time around. In fact, Lampard’s side are priced at best odds of 11/1 with 888Sport to win the title, with Liverpool and City still being the favourites.

Are The Blues Finished in the Transfer Market?

The Blues are also in the hunt for French duo Malang Sarr and Mike Maignan, with the former expected to arrive on a free transfer following his contract at Nice ending, while goalkeeper Maignan could replace Kepa Arrizabalaga, who Chelsea signed for £70 million in 2018. With so many incomings, it is likely that Chelsea will have to balance the books, with the likes of Fikayo Tomori, Emerson Palmieri, Michy Batshuayi and Davide Zappacosta being almost certain to leave.
