Monaco

Monaco had a fantastic season in 2016/17 and will be looking to get 2017/18 off to a flying start by winning the Super Cup.

Last season, they won their first French league title for seventeen years, reached the Semi Final of the UEFA Champions League, and reached the final of the French League Cup.

They come into the new season having already lost a few of their championship winning squad, with the likes of Benjamin Mendy, Tiemoue Bakayoko, and Bernardo Silva all moving to the English Premier League.

Several other star players are being targeted and it could be a struggle for Monaco to defend their title this season.

However, they have look solid in pre-season and have lost just one of their six friendly matches.

They have a good Super Cup record, winning it four times and finishing Runner Up once, in their first back in 1960.

Paris Saint-Germain

PSG were denied a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title last season, but they did win both domestic cup competitions. They are determined to become French league champions again and a big victory here could give them a psychological advantage heading into the new campaign.

They have won the French Super Cup for the past four seasons, beating Lyon in the last two. They have won six Super Cups and finished Runner Up four times since they first contested it in 1986.

Most of their squad is the same as last season, except for a couple of changes. Maxwell, who played over 200 games for PSG, retired at the end of last season but another Brazilian, Dani Alves, joins after being released by Juventus.

PSG haven’t had the greatest of pre-season’s, with their only victory coming via a penalty shoot-out over Roma following a 1-1 draw. Their other International Champions Cup matches ended in defeat, 4-2 to Tottenham Hotspur and 3-2 to Juventus.

They also drew a domestic friendly 1-1 with Paris FC.

Head to Head

These teams have met three times already in 2017.

A 92nd minute Bernardo Silva goal earned Monaco a 1-1 away draw in the league back in January, but PSG have won the last two meetings convincingly.

They won 4-1 in the French League Cup Final, which was followed by a 5-0 French Cup Semi Final victory.

Between May 2010 and March 2015, there were seven consecutive draws between the two sides.

In total, since August 1994, there have been 47 meetings. Monaco have won 19, PSG 13, and 15 have been drawn.

Betting Odds and Predictions

PSG are the favourites for this match, having won the Super Cup four times in a row and winning the past two meetings against Monaco.

Sky Bet have PSG priced at 7/10, with Monaco at 16/5. The draw looks to be a solid option and is priced at 11/4.

Both teams have scored in three of the last four meetings, but one or both failed to score in the four before that. So, based on statistics, there’s a high chance of both teams not scoring in this match. Selecting ‘NO’ in the Both Teams to Score market will give you odds of 6/5. It’s 8/13 for both sides to score, which doesn’t look to be great value.

When looking at goal scorers, there’s one stand-out betting option. Edinson Cavani has netted in each of the last four meetings between these teams. In fact, he has scored eight goals in the past seven meetings and is priced at 4/6 to score in 90 minutes. He has netted a brace in two of those games and is 2/1 to score 2 or more here.

There have been twenty-one goals scored in the last six meetings, and Over 2.5 Goals in four of those six. So, despite the statistics showing a high chance of both teams not scoring, there looks to be a big possibility of at least three goals.

Backing Over 2.5 Goals is priced at 4/6.

Top Betting Tip

Despite PSG having the head to head edge, and the better Super Cup record, they have had a poor pre-season. Therefore, it’s tough to back them but it’s also tough to bet against them.

Having looked at other markets to find our top betting tip, we have selected Edinson Cavani to score in 90 minutes as the number one bet for this match. It’s priced at 4/6 at Sky Bet and we are extremely confident of it happening.
