LA Clippers vs Denver Nuggets: Current situation
Game 5 was a very unusual game compared to the first 4 we saw in this series. The Clippers defense was nowhere to be seen as the Nuggets rolled past them and scored 131 points. Although Ivica Zubac led the scoring with 27 for LA, he didn’t do a good job on the boards collecting just 5 rebounds total. Plus, he once again let Nikola Jokic notch a triple-double which cannot happen if the Clippers want to win on Thursday.
Nuggets can breath a sigh of relief following Tuesday’s win. Going up 3-2 in the series is great, but seeing their 2nd best player go off for 43 points after a season in which he was slowed down significantly due to minor injuries here and there is even better. Denver now has a chance to clinch this series and move on, they were 24-17 SU this season in road games.

The 131 points allowed in Game 5 were the most points allowed by the Clippers in an NBA game since their early November loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder where they allowed 134 points. Denver shot 55% from the field and 51% from three, it was a very uncharacteristic game overall by the Clippers who now must win Game 6 to stay alive here.

Apart from Jamal Murray destroying the Clippers, Denver also got 23 points from Aaron Gordon, but also 21 from Russell Westbrook off the bench in just 25 minutes played. The Joker added a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists, it was the first triple-double this postseason in a winning effort.

Denver now leads the Clippers 5-4 if we count the regular season and playoffs, the two teams have met a total of 9 times this year and there’s not much to separate them. We believe it’s fair to assume we won’t see that many point scored in Thursday’s game as 11 of the last 13 meetings at the Intuit Dome have cashed on the under.

We finally got the Jamal Murray game in this series as he exploded for 43 points to lead the Nuggets to a vital win on Tuesday night. The pressure is now on the Clippers to respond as they head back home, James Harden in particular looked very bad in Tuesday’s game scoring just 11 points on 3-for-9 shooting with 4 turnovers. With their backs against the wall we’re expecting the Clippers to play with a sense of urgency here, something that wasn’t the case in Tuesday’s game. We all still remember how the Nuggets were able to win Game 4 at the Intuit Dome following a controversial ending, that will surely motivate the crowd there to push the Clippers to play a lot better than in Game 5. Russell Westbrook also deserves a mention following his 21 point burst on Tuesday, he also connected on 3 threes which we don’t see him do often at this stage of his career. The seasoned veteran has come up big for the Nuggets this season, but our question is can he sustain that going on the road in Game 6? With role players playing better at home, the likes of Harden, Kawhi and Zubac will get a lot more help than they did on Tuesday. It’ll be a tough game, but after seeing the Clippers destroy the Nuggets in this building in Game 3, we are confident they have enough to pull off a win and push this game to a deciding Game 7. Back the Clippers.
