Spanish newspaper unpacks: United wants to replace Ten Hag after World Cup

shutterstock 2179713475 1A striking news item surfaced in Spain on Tuesday. Namely, sports daily AS reported that coach Erik ten Hag might be fired from Manchester United. The Dutch coach would have to pack his bags already after the World Cup in Qatar.

Spanish national coach Luis Enrique has received an offer from the English top club, according to the newspaper. Enrique will leave the Spanish federation after the World Cup and can then take up a new job. In the past, the coach was successful at Barcelona, with whom he won the Champions League in 2015, among others.

The news that United would like to replace Ten Hag is striking. After all, the club recently revealed that it was very satisfied with the work of the former Ajax coach. Ten Hag also received support following star player Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent interview with journalist Piers Morgan. The Portuguese indicated he had no respect for Ten Hag.

However, according to AS, United are not the only club vying for Enrique’s signature. Atlético Madrid would also like to attract him as coach. That club would like to bid farewell to successful coach Diego Simeone after 11 years. Enrique was previously in charge of AS Roma and also worked at Celta de Vigo in Spain.

For now, the Spanish newspaper is the only one talking about Ten Hag’s possible replacement. The Tukker, who arrived from Ajax last summer, had a difficult start at Old Trafford, but has since been able to find his way up. The club is currently fifth in the Premier League, no less than 11 points behind leaders Arsenal.
