Randox Health Handicap 2019 Main Contenders

Artistic Rifles

Bidding to become just the second three-year-old winner of the race, with the last winner of that age being in 2012. But Charlie Hills has got him on a real roll, having trained him to win three-year-old handicaps off marks of 77 and 83 on his last two starts. He needs to defy an even higher mark here and he steps up in class and into open-age company for the first time.

Thrave

Fragile four-year-old who won one of his two races as a two-year-old over seven furlongs before making little impression in two middle-distance Listed Races in May and November of last year. He’s looked better in two handicaps dropped back to a mile this year and he looks an ideal type for the race for trainer Henry Candy, who also won the 2017 edition.

Leroy Leroy

Won a handicap off a mark of 84 on his fifth and final start as a two-year-old and looked to be struggling off his new mark in the low 90s until finishing second over 10-furlongs on his final start. He was pulled-out of a Listed Race over that trip in Ireland last week but, though he’s back in handicap-class, he may prove better over further than a mile.

Greenside

Eight-year-old that won this race as a six-year-old off a mark of 94 in 2017 for trainer Henry Candy. He struggled off higher marks after that and had to wait until the handicapper dropped him to a mark of 90 to get his head back in front this season. Ran a fine race off 94 at Epsom last time, but the old boy looks vulnerable to the younger horses.

Tahreek

Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum has four possible entries, but the early jockey bookings suggest his retained jockey Jim Crowley could be set to ride this four-year-old for Sir Michael Stoute, who trained the 2016 winner Mutamakkin. However, his last win came in a class four race and this looks a big rise in class.

Randox Health Handicap 2019 Summary

Tahreek steps up in class and Leroy Leroy would probably prefer a longer trip, whilst a win for the eight-year-old Greenside would be a feather in the cap of trainer Henry Candy. But Candy does look to have a better chance with the four-year-old Thrave, who is taken to add to the impressive list of four-year-old winners of this race at the expense of the three-year-old Artistic Rifles.
