Manchester United head off to Andalucia in midweek to try and safely get through the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 fixture against Sevilla. The Spaniards have actually never made it past the round of sixteen in the UEFA Champions League before and they are facing a bit of a tall order in this tie to get through.
Sevilla are definitely a better home side than they are out on the road and they have lost just one of their last nine European games at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. They were the 2016 Europa League Champions and will be taking on the 2017 Europa League Champions in Manchester United here. Twelve months ago the Spaniards were up against Leicester at this stage and lost 2-0 on aggregate.
Manchester United hold a W6 L3 record from their nine previous appearances at the round of sixteen in the tournament and they have triumphed in six of their last seven visits to this stage. This is a ticky away opener for them though but the Red Devils were just so comfortable through the group stage, winning five of their six games played. They have pretty sharp form out on the road in Europe too.
They slipped to a 1-0 loss at Basel on matchday five and that snapped a seven-match undefeated streak of away form in Europe that they were on. United have lost just two of their last 18 European matches (W13 D8) overall home and away. They went to Spain last season in the Europa League semi-finals and took a win at Betis. Their away record in Spain overall is pretty shoddy, but they have every chance of building something in this first leg. Former Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho went W7 L1 in eight games in charge of Los Merengues against Sevilla.
