Ghana vs Tunisia Game Preview

Both Ghana and Tunisia finished the group stage without a loss, and while the Black Stars recorded one win, the Eagles of Carthage drew all three games to advance to the knockout phase. There is no favourite in this encounter, and it could go either way so that we can expect an exciting tilt. The winner of this match will face Madagascar or D.R. Congo in the quarter-finals.

Ghana Team News and Latest Form

Ghana come into this Africa Cup of Nations knockout clash having lost just one of their last ten competitive games (W5, D4, L1) while scoring at least twice on five occasions. Overall, the so-called Black Stars are in great defensive form, registering a clean sheet in over half (six) of those matches.

Conceding an average of just 0.5 goals per fixture across that run, four-time AFCON winners Ghana scored the opening goal in each of the five wins across that period. However, the fact that they have failed to score in three of their last five AFCON tournament games will concern manager Kwesi Appiah.

Striker Jordan Ayew has scored two of his nation’s four tournament goals – both were netted in the five minutes before and after the break. Seven of Ghana’s last eight competitive games have featured under 2.5 total goals. Five of Ghana’s recent six wins in the AFCON finals have been to nil.

Tunisia Team News and Latest Form

Currently enjoying a six-game unbeaten run (W3, D3), Tunisia have qualified for the AFCON knockout stage despite drawing all three of their group stage fixtures. Interestingly, they have not conceded before half-time in any of their last eight outings, but have netted precisely two goals before the break in three of their previous four AFCON qualifier victories.

However, Tunisia’s H2H results will not inspire confidence in their fans, with the Eagles of Carthage losing each of the last six AFCON meetings (including extra-time). One positive omen though, is that Tunisia have never lost a round of 16 game at AFCON finals.

Tunisia’s top scorer during the AFCON qualifiers, Naïm Sliti, has scored each of his last four international goals during the second half. Both teams have scored in five of Tunisia’s last six AFCON finals victories.

Ghana vs Tunisia Head to Head

Ghana and Tunisia have met on ten occasions since 1963, and the Black Stars are leading the all-time H2H duels with seven wins; Tunisia have one while two matches ended without a winner. They hadn’t met in the last five years, though, as the previous clash came in 2013 when Ghana recorded a 4-2 victory in a friendly. They scored all of their four goals in the second 45 minutes. The last time they faced in the AFCON knockout stage, in 2012, Ghana were better in extra time, winning thanks to a goal from Andre Ayew, who will likely start here alongside his brother, Jordan.

Ghana vs Tunisia Betting Tip

It is hard to separate these teams at the moment, especially after everything we saw in the group stage. I am not going to back a full-time result in this one, but I am leaning toward a draw, and you can find it at 9/5 with Betfair. My additional pick would be Ghana to qualify as they do have better individuals and brothers Ayew in the attack, so I see this as the Black Stars’ advantage. Go and bet on Ghana to progress to the quarter-finals at 5/6 with William Hill.
