Germany U21 vs. Denmark U21 Game Preview

The reigning champions are hoping to open their UEFA European Under-21 Championship campaign with three points against Denmark who are regarded as underdogs in Group B. Germany is not as strong as they were two years ago when they won the title but they are still a better team than Denmark and anything but Germany win would be surprising.

Germany U21 Team News

Germany won this competition on two occasions, both in the last ten years while they also have a silver medal in 1982 when they competed as West Germany. They were lucky enough to advance to the semi-finals in 2017 as they finished the group stage behind Italy but had a better goal difference than Slovakia and Portugal in the race for the best second-placed team.

The Germans went on to beat England on penalties in the semis and then Mitchell Weiser scored the games’ only goal against Spain in the final, handing his team the second title at the European Under-21 Championship.

The squad is significantly weaker than the one in 2017 but head coach Stefan Kuntz still has a few super-talented individuals at his disposal. Levin Öztunalı, Benjamin Henrichs, Jonathan Tah, Lukas Klostermann, and Mahmoud Dahoud, and the ones who should be closely monitored at this tournament. Jonathan Tah and Lukas Klostermann already secured caps for the senior team and they will surely start in this one.

Germany got to a 2-1 victory over England in their final test before the tournament in Italy. Mahmoud Dahoud opened the scoring in the first 45 minutes while Felix Uduokhai scored a winner in injury time to give his team a victory. The Germans are without a defeat in their last 12 games and the previous loss came to Norway in October 2017. They were on a six-game winning streak before playing a 2-2 draw with France in a friendly but they returned to the winning ways in a victory over England.

Denmark U21 Team News

DenmarkDenmark is playing at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship for the eighth time and they never went to the final thus far. Considering the stiff competition at this tournament and the strength of their current squad, it is hard to expect Denmark to qualify to the knockout stage ahead of Germany and Serbia. This will be Denmark’s third straight participation at the Euro and two years ago in Poland, they were stopped in the group stage.

Denmark are still hoping to secure their first medal at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and they were close in 2015 when they made it to the semis. However, their neighbours Sweden dismantled them, 4-1, and it seems that this year’s competition is not the place for Denmark to make amends.

Head coach Niels Frederiksen has a prolific striker Marcus Ingvartsen who netted 17 goals to his name in 25 games for the country and is the national team’s top scorer. It’s interesting that the rest of the squad combined for 18 goals in total, which makes Ingvartsen a key player for this team.

Denmark U21 Latest Form

Denmark are coming off a 1-0 loss to Croatia in a friendly last Wednesday. They successfully defended against the Croats for a big part of the tilt and looked on the verge of earning a draw before Bordeaux midfielder Toma Basic scored the game’s only goal in the second minute of added time.

Nils Fredriksen’s side have suffered four losses in their previous six games and they failed to find the back of the net in the last two and it is rather concerning for the side that has an efficient striker like Ingvartsen. In their offence, both of those defeats came to the teams who are participating at this tournament.

Germany U21 vs. Denmark U21 Head to Head

Germany and Denmark have met on three occasions thus far and all three encounters were played in the last four years. The Germans won all three and two of those games ended 3-0 while they scored at least two goals in each clash. The all-time goal difference is 8-1 in Germany’s favour.

Germany U21 vs. Denmark U21 Betting Tip

Germany cannot afford to drop any points here if they want to stay in contention for the top spot in the group and considering their record against Denmark, three points here are imperative.
