The 2019 European Open in Hamburg continues with the round-of-16 matches this Wednesday. The top-seeded Dominic Thiem meets Marton Fucsovics, and World No. 4 is considered as a massive favourite to reach the quarterfinals. Still, Fucsovics is a top 50 player and will try his best to upset the odds.

Dominic Thiem News & Form

Dominic Thiem

Dominic Thiem from Austria

The 25-year old Austrian put on a good performance in his opening match in Hamburg, defeating the clay-court specialist Pablo Cuevas in straight sets 6-3 7-6. Thiem took advantage of Cuevas’ poor serving and converted two of his nine break points while winning 39% of Cuevas’ 2nd serve points.

Thiem is coming off a painful first-round exit at Wimbledon, and he’s glad to return on his favourite surface. Dominic is 24-10 this season including 18 wins and six losses on the clay court, while Thiem is 131-44 on clay in his career. He won a couple of titles in 2019, lifting the trophy in Indian Wells on a hard court and Barcelona on a clay court.

Marton Fucsovics News & Form

The 27-year old Hungarian opened with an impressive straight-set victory over the home favourite Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3 6-0. Marton broke Kohlschreiber’s serve four times while winning 21 of 41 points on return.

Fucsovics came to Hamburg as World No. 50 and with an 18-18 record in 2019. He reached the championship match in Sofia on a hard court back in February, but Marton is still looking for his second title in a career. Fucsovics is 24-20 on a clay court on the ATP Tour, but he lost four of his previous five matches on the slowest surface.

Thiem vs Fucsovics Head to Head

These two guys will meet each other for the third time, and Dominic Thiem has been victorious in straight sets on both previous occasions. However, their previous duel occurred in 2014, and both Thiem and Fucsovics have improved a lot since then.

Betting Odds and Predictions: Thiem v Fucsovics

The bookies are pretty sure Dominic Thiem will have an easy job against Marton Fucsovics. You can take Thiem at 1/5 with William Hill, and Dominic is a 4/7 favourite to win in straight sets. Fucsovics is available at 15/4 odds to win with BetVictor, while William Hill offers 5/4 odds on Marton to earn a set.

Although Fucsovics possesses a solid serve, the bookmakers don’t expect to see a tiebreak. The price is 11/5 with Betfair. Betway offers a 20.5-game line on the totals with the over at 4/5 odds and the under at 10/11 odds.

Our Thiem vs Fucsovics Hamburg 2019 European Open Betting Tip

I like Dominic’s spot here. He’s playing on a clay court ahead of the North American hard-court tournaments. Also, Thiem is highly motivated to bounce back from a disappointing result at Wimbledon. Hereof, I would take the Austrian to win in straight sets at 4/7 with William Hill.

If you want to earn greater wages, you’ll have to take a risk and pick Thiem in a combo with the total games. However, betting on the total games with the line at 20.5 is a tricky job. The first H2H duel between Thiem and Fucsovics saw 20 games in the total despite a tiebreak in the first set.
