32Red.com Mares’ Hurdle – Main Contenders

Casablanca MIx

6-year-old who was originally trained in France, but has won 1 of her 5 starts in England since joining Nicky Henderson, who trained the 2016 winner Polly Peachum. However, she would have most likely made it two wins last time at Exeter, where she had drawn right away from the useful The Nipper only to fall at the last. Reverts to hurdle here though after 4 runs over fences.

Dusky Legend

Rated 139, and would be another reverting to hurdles after falling last time in a novice chase. She has some excellent form over hurdles though, including a third at the Cheltenham Festival. However, she has an annoying habit of coming second, which she’s done ten-times, whilst she’s won just three-times.

Poppy Kay

Lightly-raced 8-year-old who has won 4 of her starts. One of those wins was on her seasonal debut at Newbury when she won a handicap off a mark of 129, and she was not disgraced next time when third off 135 behind the useful High Bridge. Has a few-pounds to find with a few of her rivals, but looks to have a decent chance back against her own sex having raced against the boys last time.

Angels Antics

One win from five runs so far in her career, but followed that win with a decent second to the useful Cap Soleil. The way she stayed on there over 2-furlongs also suggested she’ll love the step-up in trip here, whilst that run proved she handles heavy ground having also won on soft.

Midnight Jazz

Rated 140, and ran a good race to be second in last year’s renewal behind the higher-rated Lifeboat Mona. Didn’t run particularly well on seasonal debut, but can be forgiven that because she was trying to give lots of weight away to her rivals. Her small stable also had a winner on New Year’s Eve, so she could go well now she doesn’t have to concede weight to anyone.

Brillare Momento

Not disgraced on her last start when she had little chance trying to concede weight to unexposed rivals in a handicap, and better judged on her 3 wins in 4 starts before that. Concedes 2lb to all her rivals here though and, though her trainer is in good form, she would be getting weight off a few of these if it was a handicap.

Our 32Red.com Mares’ Preview And Tip

Casablanca Mix and Dusky Legend could both go well now returned to hurdles, whilst Poppy Kay and Angels Antics could have more improvement to come. However, as Midnight Jazz is the only one rated as highly as any of the three previous winners, she could be worth chancing to go one place better than last year.
